Overview
Ben sits squarely in an interdisciplinary space between the fields of Mental Health, Education, and Conflict Resolution. During his first career in youth development, Ben began asking the question “who helps the helpers?” and realized that there was often little to no support for people trying to make a difference in their lives, organization, or communities. This realization served as the catalyst for Ben to become cross-trained in therapy and conflict resolution and he utilizes those skills to help activate others’ potential so that they can bring about positive changes in their worlds.
Professional Experience
Before taking on any project, Ben centers his goal of activating communities, organizations, and individuals to increase their capacity to meet their missions and leave things better than he found them. Ben currently splits his time between Kent State University where he is a Residence Hall Director and Alternative Therapeutics in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio where he is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). In both roles, Ben specializes in group facilitation and restorative practices through a trauma-informed lens. Additionally, Ben is a trained mediator and is completing his second master’s degree in Peace in Conflict Studies at Kent State University with an expected graduation of Spring 2027.
Ben has planned, coordinated, and facilitated training/intervention experiences for audiences across numerous settings. Topics he has recently provided training and facilitation include Higher Education Policies/Procedures, Conflict Management, De-escalation Skills, Organizational Change Management, Mental Health/Active Listening, Trauma-informed Practices, Live-Action Scenario Training, Intensive Team-building Retreats, and topics related to working with the LGBTQ+ community.
In 2024, Ben was invited to sit on the Association for Conflict Resolution Community Mediation and Restorative Practices Leadership Section where he continues to serve as an expert trainer in trauma he helps advance the field of Conflict Resolution on a national scale. In the helping fields it is often asked, “who helps the helpers?” and Ben has leveraged his interdisciplinary skills and no small amount of determination to fill that niche.
