The Limits of the Law, Not Necessarily of Lawyers
For many people, conflict resolution and “the law” are viewed as almost interchangeable.
When disputes arise, the assumption is often that attorneys, lawsuits, and courtrooms are the only real option (beyond arguing late into the night).
In reality, countless conflicts are resolved outside of court every day through mediation, facilitated dialogue, negotiation, and multidisciplinary problem solving. More and more, even attorneys themselves are recognizing the value of these approaches. They have been for decades, actually.
Mosaic Welcomes Attorney and Mediator Megan Villafuerte

Megan Villafuerte joining Mosaic Collaborative Consulting reflects that same recognition, which is part of why she’s such a meaningful addition to our growing team. Her experience with multidisciplinary mediation services makes her a tremendous addition to the team.
Megan and Mosaic founder Alec Chapa first connected while serving together as fellows with the Public Disputes & Consensus Building Committee of the American Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section. Through that work, they discovered a shared passion for access to justice, conflict resolution, and creating more collaborative alternatives to adversarial systems.
Megan’s Background, and a Shared Passion for Impact
Originally from outside Chicago, Megan attended Vermont Law School, where she studied alternative dispute resolution and mediation before entering legal practice.
While working in family law, she quickly recognized something important about herself and the legal profession more broadly.
“I realized I was much more focused on the human impact than profit alone,” Megan shared, a sentiment that many attorneys share as they join the workforce, eager to help people.
That realization helped shape the direction of her career. She later joined a law firm that emphasized tailored multidisciplinary teams and out-of-court solutions designed around the real needs of clients and families — which was an approach much more aligned with her philosophy surrounding conflict resolution and healing. That’s when she decided to lean more into multidisciplinary mediation services.
Continued Commitment to Excellence, Dignity and Empowerment
Today, Megan continues balancing teaching with her growing mediation and dispute resolution work, focusing especially on education-related disputes, youth justice-involved matters, family conflicts, and school board and parent disputes. She regularly mediates landlord-tenant disputes for the Center for Conflict Resolution (CCR) in Chicago which regularly serves more than 15,000 parties each year, and volunteers in support of victims of sexual assault.
At the center of her work is a belief that conflict resolution is ultimately about restoring dignity and empowerment.
“The more people are empowered and dignified, the more they are healed, and the more peace spreads,” said Megan.
That philosophy of utilizing multidisciplinary mediation services closely aligns with Mosaic’s mission of making high-quality conflict resolution services more accessible, collaborative, and human-centered.
Multidisciplinary Approach to Multifaceted Needs
Megan’s addition also reflects the continued growth of Mosaic’s multidisciplinary approach to dispute resolution. While mediation itself often occurs outside of formal legal processes, legal knowledge and interdisciplinary collaboration can still play an important role in helping parties navigate complex conflicts effectively.
Her experience as both an attorney and mediator strengthens Mosaic’s ability to support clients seeking practical, relationship-conscious solutions that extend beyond traditional adversarial models. She knows the law well; which is part of why she can speak so powerfully about its limits and the powerful solutions available to parties outside the courtroom.
Megan’s Specializations, Sharing Mosaic’s People-First Focus
Megan is also a member of the Mediation Council of Illinois and the Illinois State Bar Association, further reflecting her active engagement within both the legal and dispute resolution communities.
As Mosaic continues expanding its work in mediation, workplace conflict, landlord-tenant disputes, education-related conflict, and multidisciplinary dispute system design, partnerships with professionals who share a commitment to access to justice and collaborative problem solving remain central to the organization’s long-term vision.
Megan joining Mosaic marks more than just a new professional relationship.
It represents another step toward building a broader network of professionals committed to resolving conflict in ways that prioritize dignity, healing, collaboration, and practical solutions over unnecessary escalation.
